Holistic Therapies

Twenty-five different Holistic Therapies are described below. They include ancient healing systems as well as modern therapies and techniques recently developed.  The word “modalities” is used to describe various therapies and techniques.  

Acupuncture

A 5000 year old system used in Asia whereby needles are used to stimulate acupressure points along the meridian lines.  Chinese method involves longer, thicker needles and is a little more evasive.  Japanese methods involve shorter, thinner needles and many needles are placed at one point. 

The arm, neck or feet can be used to tell which meridians are blocked.  A Korean method uses the herb mugwort to make a paste. This placed on points can hold the stimulation longer and acts like a laser.  A cupping method can be used to access larger muscle areas.

Good for:     pain relief, asthma, women=s monthly cycles and hormonal balance, addictions.


Ayurvedic Medicine

An old medicine system from India.  It is all about knowing your constitutions called Doshas.   It is believed that a person will have one main dosha over the two others. They include:

Vatta - Thin

Pitta - Medium build

Kapha - Heavy build, oily skin, deliberate in movement

The point of the medicine is to balance the others.  Dosha is determined by examining the pulse, eyes and tongue. 

Ayurvedic medicine includes Indian herbs for cleansing, fasting and is based in Astrology (different calendar from west).  It takes 5-8 years to become an Ayurvedic Doctor. 


Registered Trademarks Techniques

These are techniques like: Alexander Technique, Kelder Kreis and Trager which vary slightly in technique and postures but they are intended to align the body.  The understanding here is that illness can be traced back to how we >use= our body.  The techniques help to re-educate the nervous system.

Good for:     Stroke, MS and waking up >numb= areas in the body.


Biofeedback Training

Biofeedback Training was developed in the 1970's as a first device for practitioners to understand conscientiousness shifts in the subtle bodies.  It monitors automatic functions of the body.  It=s a base line for other therapies to be developed. 

Good for:     Insomnia, migraines and joint problems.


Colonic or Colon Hydrotherapy

Enema (fluid injection) procedure which removes feces matter/material from the colon walls. 

Good for:     aggressive colon cleansing

Craniosacral Therapy

A non invasive form of applying pressure and palpitations to balance the body. It is not massage.

Good for:     pain relief, realignment of spine, emotional release and scull alignment in infants following birth.


Osteopathy

Similar to chiropractic treatment.  It employs craniosacral therapy and joint manipulation.  Can include work on ribs, diaphragm and uses pelvic tilt methods.

Good for:     Soft tissue treatment, improving resistance to disease.


Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

An ancient system of healing which combines the use of herbs, acupuncture, and exercise to balance the yin/yang (female/male) energy in the body to obtain healthy Chi (life energy source).

TCM recognizes five characteristics or elements which relates to the human body; fire, water, wood, metal, earth and air.  Diagnoses are obtained through the tongue, nails, pulses and bodily fluids like saliva and sweat. 


Qigong

Energetic postures, movement and healing techniques to prevent illness, promote good health and treat illness. 

Good for:     preventative medicine, restoring health, self care.


Rolfing

Is another registered trademark technique. It an extremely deep tissue massage which restores flexibility.

Good for:     Chronic stiffness, emotional release.


Lymphatic Drainage Massage

A gentle all body massage intended to move lymph fluid throughout the body.  It is not intended to relax the body.  Essential oils can be used.

Good for:     poor circulation, improves immunity, eliminates toxins.


Lomi Lomi

A Hawaiian massage with coconut oil.  There is a ritual and ceremony to it which involves ritual and dancing around the table.  It=s a three hour session. 

Good for:     Relaxation, rejuvenation, realigning spirit with the body.



Hot Rock Therapy and Massage


As rocks are the oldest element on earth, it is believed in many cultures to have significant healing powers.  Rocks are heated and placed on points along the body to release and refer it=s innate healing.  It is practised widely in Spain.

Good for:     Poor circulation, relaxation, emotional release.


Traditional Thai Massage

A full body massage that does not use oils.  Yoga, acupressure and shiatsu are combined in one technique. 

Good for:     Flexibility, mobility, relaxation, circulation, immunity and detoxification.


Magnetic Field Therapy

Use of magnets and magnetic devices to heal fractures.

Good for:     broken and splintered bones.


Ear Candling

A method of extracting ear wax from the ear canal that is thousands of years old.  Beeswax is lit and run into the ear.

Good for:     Extracting ear wax, clearing sinuses and headaches, improves hearing.


Reiki

A Japanese, hands on energy technique by a facilitator of universal energy.  Practitioner must be initiated by a Reiki Master in order to certify.  

Good for:     Lethargy, recovery from illness, pain relief, emotional and mental conditions.


Therapeutic Touch

A laying on of hands which work in the auric field.  Only basic energy healing principles are learned but it=s highly regarded in the medical field.

Good for:     Energetic support to allopathic (western) medical practices.


Pranic (another word for energy) Healing

An energy healing practice in India which incorporates energy scanning and sweeping, for instance.  Another name is SHEN, the ‘Specific Healing Energy Nexus’ technique.

Good for:     Recovery from all illnesses, pain relief, emotional and mental conditions.


Polarity Therapy

An ayurvedic based holistic system developed by Dr. Randolph Stone.  It considers the body as having electrical poles and that these are aligned with positive, negative and neutral pulses. It incorporates diet, healing touch and movement. 

Good for:     Allergies, back pain, respiratory disorders, migraines, headaches, cardiovascular concerns digestive disorders, emotional and mental issues, stress and stress related illnesses.


Flower Remedies

These include flower essences and Bach remedies. The vibration of the flower essences interact with the subtle bodies of energy in and around the body to correct and balance energy which resolves problems within the body.

Good for:     Emotional, mental and psychological problems.


Sound Therapy

Sound is energy and affects energy.  Therefore, sound can be manipulated to affect the energetic fields to bring systems into balance, release old energy or create a foundation to attract new energy.

Good for:     Overall health and realigning/balancing energy, emotional, spiritual and mental problems.


Colour Therapy

Colour has electromagnetic qualities similar to sound and is used either on its own or in conjunction with other modalities/therapies to affect energetic change.

Good for:     Overall health and realigning/balancing energy, emotional, spiritual and mental problems.


Crystals

Crystal healing is an ancient healing art and uses the gentle, transformative properties of gems.  Crystals have been used for healing and adornment since the beginning of time.  They magnetically attract certain things or repel unwanted energies.  They resonate at different frequencies and can store, transmit and receive energies.

Good for:     stress, removing blockages, supports new intentions, brings harmony into the environment, neutralizes negative energies, draws energy away from an over-stimulated area or energizes a depleted one.
